| On "classical" music... |

There's a chance I'll be going to see a performance of Carmina Burana this weekend, which I'm looking forward to. Now, I've never listened to it all the way through, so I figured, since it's a quiet night work, I'd listen to it here. And I heard something I hadn't heard in a very long time... dynamics! Unfortunately, due the background noise, I couldn't hear the soft parts. And if I turned them up, the loud parts were too much :( I'm looking forward to hearing a much less industrial version on Saturday. |

[Dec. 11th, 2007|05:30 pm] |
We haven't had a games day in a while, and were thinking that it's about time to host one again. So, if anyone's interested, we're looking at Sunday, January 6th, 2008. Leaving me a comment if you're interested in coming :)

| To Boston and back... |
[Nov. 12th, 2007|07:59 pm] |
Melted_snowball and I made it back from Boston safely, almost right on time too. And as he promised, I did not get hit by car (thought there was one on saturday night we weren't sure was going to stop). I had a fantastic time, and met some wonderful people.
Educational things I learned on this trip: -MIT has their own unit for measing distance called the Smoot -Dun dun noodle are very, VERY spicy -parking in the middle of the street in front of a bus is acceptable practice -it's possible for even giant pixelboard signs advertising gas companies to become historical landmarks -Boston civil engineers are sadistic -melted_snowball has awesome friends, some of whom may or may not be made of chocolate :)
The play was excellent. As good as, or better then anything I saw here during the last year (it almost competes with Man of La Mancha). And Annie Lennox was amazing. Even the warm up singer was great. The two moments that I will probably never forget are the warm up artist stopping in the middle of her second song and saying: "oh, I fucked it up" and Annie stopping in the middle of a song to tell a story about misunderstood lyrics.
Of course, tonight I will pay for having such a good time, due to the early flight this morning, and then working until 2:30 in the morning. A price gladly paid for such a wonderful time.

| Second annual fancy dress party! |
[Sep. 17th, 2007|07:38 pm] |
Saturday, November 17th, M and I will be hosting our second annual fancy dress wine and cheese party. For those of you who attended last year, the format will be much the same. For those of you who did not, preferred dress is semi-formal, and attendees are asking to a bottle of wine and/or your favourite cheese. We hope this will give people a chance to try some new things.
The party will likely start in the early evening, somewhere around 7. If you need directions, or have any other questions, please leave a comment and I will make another post, or otherwise get back to you.
Hope to see everyone there :) J |

| Mild Amusement |
[Aug. 27th, 2007|02:17 pm] |
So, M and I popped my may parents place a week ago, after seeing King Lear. My father's birthday was last saturday, but they weren't going to be, so celebrating his birthday a week early worked out well.
My mother baked Amish Sweet Bread a little earlier in day. This is one of those chain recipes where you have the starter, look after it for a while, then divide it and give it to a bunch of friends. She thought I would probably enjoy baking one and gave me a starter and copy of the instructions. At the bottem of the page, it claims that only the Amish know how to create the starter. From what I've been told about sourdough bread, I could probably figure it out without too much difficulty. What really get me is that the recipe calls for instant pudding mix.... Somehow this doesn't strike me as a very Amish ingredient...
I could be wrong. |

| More PLC trouble... |
[Jul. 21st, 2007|11:04 am] |
My first mistake today was coming to work.
There was an alarm going off in the weld shop, which was not going off in the maintenance dept. The data is not being transferred across the network. To make a long story short, I traced out the cables and replaced two hubs. Now I can ping everything, but the two PLCs aren't talking to each other. I feel like some kind of marriage counselor... |

So, the order came down yesterday that we are to design and build a machine. This is actuall pretty cool, because it's what I miss most about my old job. The machine is pretty small and simple, it's function being to move boxes of air bags under the assembly line and elevate them to a height the operator can easily access them and install them into the seats.
There is a down side. It has be in three weeks. I can deal with that. There is a second down side. We have to build it out of spare parts. This I have trouble with. If you want a machine that works well, you need to get the right parts for it. I have this fear it's going to look exactly like what it's made out of. |

Com system: maintenance to the rear seat line!
*walk to the rear seat line*
T/L: we have a couple issues.
*J thinks 'you're telling me'*
T/L: we need this light moved to the other side of the line. It's been a problem for a while now. Hasn't anyone told you?
J: this is the first I've heard about it.
T/L: oh. Well we also need you to look at the AGV.
Can't move the light while they're working, so that will have to wait for lunch. AGV is needed right now, so I look into that. Then my manager comes out.
Manager: morning! We need you move that light to the othe side of the line.
J: ok.
Another 45 minutes pass, still working on the AGV. Plant engineer comes out.
Engineer: morning, we'd like you to move that light to the other side of the line.
*J thinks 'there must be some kind of strange echo in here, I keep hearing the same thing...'* |

| I ROCK!!! |
[May. 28th, 2007|07:32 pm] |
So, for those of you who don't know, we had a major breakdown at work about a week and a half ago. The kind of breakdown that can't be fixed in a few hours. Fortunately, there is a back-up plan for when this particular part of the machine breaks. The spot weld guns are bypassed, and the weld are now done by MIG welding robots.
Now, in order to fix the machine, basically the whole thing had to come apart so the broken bit could be removed and worked on. Because it will take a while, the machine needs to be run without those parts. If it were just some sensors, those would be easy, but there's a remote CC-Link module mounted to the unit. This means the configuration of the CC-Link network has to be changed. Of couse, no one here really understands how to configure a CC-Link network. I managed to alter to the program to make it think the spot guns were in the home position, and to ignore the missing CC-Link module.
The machine started up without a hitch. |

Just a reminder to anyone who's interested, we plan on having games day this Sunday (June 3rd). Probably start early... one-ish, and finish early as I'm switching back to days.
Drop-in Drop-out event, so even if you can only stay for a bit, we'd love to see you!
